As many venerated, noble foster-mothers with grey-streaked,
fragrant, soft tresses showered her with praises,
on her goodly red feet bearing golden ankle-bells,
in the sand-strewn courtyard, without marking the ground,
while the red-footed cock of the house-dwelling dove
flew aloft, practising short flights with its mate—
whenever she sees the young girls of her playgroup,
that young woman of fine forehead thinks of us,
her sorrowful grief stirring as she lives in loneliness; to dispel that,
completing the mission we came for, having resided in an alien land on the king's service,
you too, as the wheel-rims of the long chariot adorned with ornaments
shook the horses trained in action that were weary of the stable,
while fine streaks of lightning flashed, cutting through the green sprouts,
and rain fell along with the talavam and jasmine vines,
leaving behind the long expanse of the woodland thick with flowers
breathing a cool, fragrant scent—the moment I said, 'Drive on!',
without delaying, driving swiftly,
making the bells on the harness jingle,
you brought us near the town, so that we may obtain joy!
