Tired of deep sleep in the thicket of long-leaved, tangled vaḷḷai,
the turtle with sharp claws departs by the rock trailed by creepers
and fills its gaping mouth in the wide water-ghat;
with a gait like that of revellers intoxicated with palmyra palm-toddy,
stirring up the sweet, large wetland, it shrinks
into the soft leaves of the nearby white water lily, O man of such a town!
Do not lie; I know your deceit—
you do not even realise what is held in your own hands! Yesterday,
savoured as your right the newly arrived fresh floods of the Vaiyai
with a young woman whose kohl-lined, lovely, painted eyes are captivating;
though the company of courtesans tried to hide it, it could not be contained;
the scandal is great indeed; it is greater
than the uproar in the glorious assembly
when they questioned the witness regarding the wicked, false oath,
'I do not know her,' uttered by the virtueless man
who stole the fair beauty of the young daughter of lovely forehead
in the renowned town of Kaḷḷūr with its sugarcane-dense backyards
and many-flowered fields filled with ancient, sight-worthy fame,
and, seizing his large kin dense as budding shoots, poured ashes on his head!
