Mixing the bright blossoms with dark petal-plates of the forest pādiri
with the summer jasmine, so it looked beautiful,
she pressed them into her few, five-part braids, tucked in soft clusters
of honey-dripping bur-flower tree, swung her arms making
her shining, clear-stemmed bangles tinkle, made her anklets chime
as she stepped softly with a few gentle strides. When I said, “Let me see
your lovely, splendid back; walk ahead
just a little,” she felt shy to walk, quickly
cast an innocent, bashful deer-like glance, and bending gently,
stood with her head bowed down. Seeing that,
we could not hasten on either, and in that place,
we stayed in the harsh wilderness—listening
to the roaring sound of a great tiger killing a male elephant,
and the fierce beat of the rapid, hard-rimmed tuṭi drum,
resounding in the settlement of triumphant bowmen.
