Rising from the great ocean of shimmering waves for the world to worship,
the fearsome disc of the sun spread its radiant rays,
drying up the water-holes, scorching the good land
so that it lost its fruitfulness in the moistureless season.
In that wide, terrifying forest with many parting pathways,
to spot the coming of new wayfarers walking the road,
men skilled with the bow spy from high perches on tall yā trees
in the harsh wilderness seized with spreading branches. Had I known
her resolute mind towards that unyielding, bull-like youth who led her away,
alas, to bring renown to my wealthy mansion, like Vañci protected
and guarded by Cēra king Kōtai of the gleaming spear,
I would have delightfully united them—
the secure sleep upon the burgeoning bosom
of my simple girl of splendid, fair forehead, free of grief!
