நீர்திகழ் கண்ணியர், ஊர்வயின் பெயர்தர;
Like the star-strewn sky without clouds,
the white flowers of the dense-leaved mucuṇṭai blossom;
plucking the large blooms from the curved clusters of white-striped gloriosa,
cowherds carrying curved crooks shaped like large tuṭi drums,
their chaplets dripping with water, return toward the village
with herds of many cattle that suffered the day-long rains.
The cloudbursts from the heavens far away have poured abundantly,
and swift streams of water flow down every street.
Accompanied by loud claps of thunder, heavily darkened and confusing,
the cold season has set in! Does my lover—
even if he does not know our state—
know his own plight, he who stays in the camp
of the fiercely wrathful king, whose army encamps frightfully,
ringed in the night by elephants of towering gait and searing fury?
