புகையின் பொங்கி, வியல்விசும்பு உகந்து,
பனிஊர் அழற்கொடி கடுப்பத் தோன்றும்
இமயச் செவ்வரை மானும் கொல்லோ?
பல்புகழ் நிறைந்த வெல்போர் நந்தர்
சீர்மிகு பாடலிக் குழீஇக், கங்கை
நீர்முதற் கரந்த நிதியம் கொல்லோ?
எவன்கொல்? வாழி, தோழி! வயங்கொளி
நிழற்பால் அறலின் நெறித்த கூந்தல்,
குழற்குரல், பாவை இரங்க, நத்துறந்து,
ஒண்தொடி நெகிழச் சாஅய்ச், செல்லலொடு
கண்பனி கலுழ்ந்துயாம் ஒழியப், பொறை அடைந்து,
இன்சிலை எழிலேறு கெண்டிப், புரைய
நிணம்பொதி விழுத்தடி நெருப்பின் வைத்துஎடுத்து,
அணங்கரு மரபின் பேஎய் போல
விளரூன் தின்ற வேட்கை நீங்கத்,
துகளற விளைந்த தோப்பி பருகித்,
குலாஅ வல்வில் கொடுநோக்கு ஆடவர்
புலாஅல் கையர், பூசா வாயர்,
ஒராஅ உருட்டுங் குடுமிக் குராலொடு
மராஅஞ் சீறூர் மருங்கில் தூங்கும்
செந்நுதல் யானை வேங்கடம் தழீஇ,
வெம்முனை அருஞ்சுரம் இறந்தோர்
நம்மினும் வலிதாத் தூக்கிய பொருளே!

Is it like the red mountain of the Himālayas that rises into the wide sky,
swelling like smoke, resembling a fiery banner touched with snow?
Or is it like the treasure concealed under the waters of the Ganges,
gathered at famous Pāṭalīputra by the Nandas of many-praised, victorious battles?
What can it be, my friend? May you live long! He abandoned us,
leaving us weeping, eyes spilling tears, suffering sorrow,
our bright bracelets slipping loose, our bodies growing frail,
while the flute-voiced maiden, whose curled hair resembles black rippling sand
spread in shining shadow, grieved in pity. Reaching the stony slopes,
they cut down a fine, handsome bull and skillfully
roasted its fat-laden choice cuts over the fire,
and like spirits of dreaded nature,
to satisfy their craving after devouring raw flesh,
they drank pure, fully matured toddy.
Men with bent, strong bows and cruel glares,
with flesh-stained hands and unwashed mouths,
along with owls whose tufted heads roll incessantly,
dwell in small hamlets surrounded by bur-flower trees,
in Vēṅkaṭam of red-frontleted elephants. Beyond that harsh, fierce wilderness
he has crossed—weighing that wealth as far weightier than us!
