‘Having spoken words that melt the heart, mingled with love,
and sworn an oath never to be broken, why did he perform an action
and become entirely changed?’—stopping with this question,
pray cease grieving! In the fearful wilderness where the summer wind
leaps among branches and strips them bare,
while two-fold herds of bears with hairy paws seize
the abundant white flowers, looking like turned ivory tusks,
of the mahua tree whose clustered buds resemble wildcat paws,
and troops of black-faced langurs, looking as if smeared with soot,
suddenly leap upon the dry, tall bamboos,
so that the white grains from the bamboos scatter onto the hot rock,
and roast, popping up with a sound like snapping fingernails—
he who crossed many wastelands of the towering mountain
is not at fault; rather, it is these shoulders—O friend!—
incapable of binding every day the one who loved,
that let slip the shining, bright, beautiful bracelets,
that are alone to blame!
