Let bracelets climb on your arms! Let your sorrow end!
Let a garland be fashioned for your wavy, dark tresses!
He who crossed the difficult wilderness—where young men with warrior anklets on their feet,
to establish the good fame of brave warriors
who did not retreat but withstood the white spears with closely fitted sockets
of the Maḻavar warriors so the herds with breeding bulls could be brought back,
wash the many names carved on the wide surface
of the tall, standing hero stone set like a hillock resting like a cow elephant,
so that the damp back shines with fragrant turmeric,
and crown it, amid the hum of striped bees, with a chaplet
woven of red-flowered karantai tied with hard fiber stripped by an arrow,
and then return to their settlement—
has come in haste to wipe away the tears from your eyes,
resembling the bright red water-lily blooming in the fresh, cool fields
of bending ears of paddy in Sirukuṭi of Vāṇaṉ,
whose dwelling is embraced by the ocean grove of great waters,
where women of fair foreheads dance the kuravai on the bathing ghat
bringing their sand-dolls, while a clear call rings from the horn
blown into the open-mouthed circle moving around to the beat,
their black tresses of splendid color swaying with ear-ornaments
upon hips raised at the sides and strung with golden coins,
now that the cool, final days of the rains of the month of Tai have come!
