மெல்லம் புலம்ப! நெகிழ்ந்தன, தோளே;

Lord of the gentle shores, where fishermen hunting schools of fish / in the hamlet of small huts by the fish-reeking street / weave the round-petaled blue water lily, blossomed in the dark backwaters, with ñāḻal blossoms! / Her arms have grown thin; / looking out toward the littoral grove’s vast harbor where swelling waves, stirring red prawns, / splash foam touching the bending boughs of thick-trunked punnai trees, / her dark, beautiful body, like Kaḻumalam of Kuṭṭuvaṉ with his fine chariot / and generous hand, owning horses with trimmed manes, / has lost its ancient beauty; / with sleepless eyes she wanders in distress. As for you, / even during the night when the little black hen-bird, / unable to unite with the cock in their thorny nest on the sacred tree, / languishes in painful sorrow, / you think only of your own town; I grieve!
