“Without saying that the wilderness is cruel, where the striped great tiger hesitates,
and the tall bamboo of swaying canes on the long mountain bends to the summer wind,
while we weep, he goes to bring [wealth] hither,
going in bond to wealth that does not stay,”
so you say, O friend! Truly,
you are very simple!
Even if he could not be restrained by your coral mouth with teeth shining with bright smiles,
like pearls from the great, fair haven of Koṟkai,
guarded with righteousness by the Pāṇḍyas who fight valiant battles,
and [guarded by] the white-tusked elephants yielded by northern Veṅkaṭam,
how could your warlike glance, with kohl-rimmed eyes streaked with red lines,
ever let him depart?—
[a glance] that, destroying the greatness of the round-stemmed kuvaḷai
suited to clear water rich in honey, is never sated,
looking like the good spear of victory that conquered kings in battle
where vultures hover, swaying with blood?
