The red-legged cock of the spotted-striped dove, / going to a distant region with its small, frail hen, / pecks and feeds on pebbles in the fine-sand path, / crosses the deadly wasteland beside low hillocks in the wide expanse / freed from heat where the striped maral has withered, / and calls out from the many-fruited, lovely boughs of the nelli, whose tasty fruit / saved the fading breath of travelers coming from afar who thirsted for water. / If you have thought upon that path, going there to stay / bound by wealth difficult to attain that sustains life, / let your undertaking speed well! / For her, whose long, soft, bamboo-like arms resemble the internodes of reeds / shooting up in the cleft where old fruits hang, / appearing crowned with dancing young clouds in the realm of Aviyaṉ of the fine chariot and abundant, intoxicating toddy— / if her well-fashioned, choice bangles slip loose, / is there any remedy in the land where you dwell apart?
