To wash the foul-smelling, spotted brow of the large-trunked elephant / that was felled by a huge tiger, the waterfall brought down on the sacred, high peak at night, / dispelling the dense darkness of the terrifying mountain cleft, / while lightning-gleaming spears lit the path along which he travels. / Coming alone, undeterred by the chilling drizzle, / the lingering scent of his garland of kutaḷam blossoms intertwined with wild jasmine, / thriving in a difficult place beside descending water, wafted by the shifting breeze, / he enters our home, a low-thatched hut / with a garden where black pepper climbs over boulders, / his body overflowing with delight. Seeing his state, / thinking, 'This is Murukaṉ,' mother utters words of praise, / scatters lovely red millet with water, / and prays to the tall lord. Alas! / What will become of it— / our bond formed with the lord of the adorned mountains, / where sapphire-hued peacocks call among radiant, swaying branches of the kino tree / blossomed like gold?
