Like a garland of kūtaḷam thrown up swiftly into the sky, / white storks with green legs curve in flying flight, / scattering with flowers over the fertile region filled with the roaring sea / in the newly arrived early winter that puts an end to barren loneliness. / Even as the beauty-stealing pallor afflicts me, / does he not know our grief? Even if he knows, / having no tenderness like ours in his heart, / does he not think of our world? / How shall I understand this? / With the oncoming north wind whose growing limit is unknown, / the young sprout of affliction that arose between my breasts / lengthened into a dense mass of sorrow within my agitated heart, / spreading the lovely boughs of covert rumor raised by the townspeople, / casting out radiant shoots of unquenchable desire, / like a great, shameless tree praised by poets, / overshadowing the whole expanse of the earth; / and though the buds of public scandal burst into bloom, he has not returned.
