Thundering so the vast sky trembles, distressing serpents, / bringing torrential showers of pouring rain, / the heavens ushered in the season at midnight, / when the solitary shepherd, guarding his herd of sheep with nodding heads, / kindled a small fire with twirling sticks, / holding a stout-legged sling, a pot, and a leather cape, / while fine, manifold drizzle soaks one of his flanks, / leaning his weight upon his staff, / lets out a whistle from his folded lips that rings out swiftly; / hearing it, the short jackal watching for bounding lambs is terrified / and scurries away into the thorny, low brushwood / of the cool, fragrant woodland—in such a place lies the town / where dwells the tender, young woman, / endowed with chaste love replete with fragrant jasmine blossoms.
