Leaning against the high jar to fill it,
she had tended with water drawn in a scoop
the bower of purslane, where she threw and played with her ball,
the mistress of the wealthy house, showing her youthful charm!
When I rebuked her, saying, 'May the spray of your water turn to white ash!',
she did not answer back, but with lisping sweet words
spoke so that my sweet life blended with hers;
yet she of the fine forehead would not stay here in the house of abundant rice,
trusting in the love of a stranger,
leaving us behind here in the cruel wilderness of hot hills,
where dark herds of bear cubs snatch
the white hollow flowers of the round-trunked mahua,
in the harsh forest where the vast earth pants with heat.
She who left yesterday, possessing great innocence:
beneath the short chastetree where she gathered leaf-garments
to deck her delicate wide loins,
do you not see the sand-play arranged
by my daughter's copper-hued little fingers, O you who have eyes?
