In order to feed on the white male vāḷai fish
that rose, longing for food, in the long dark pool,
a heron, afraid its footsteps might be known,
stealthily slinks by like a thief entering a guarded house:
such is the ghat of the man from the town!
Let whatever happen, happen! Is there any shame now?
Let him just come to our settlement!
As his women with collyrium-lined eyes streaked with red look on,
I will seize his garland and his garment,
and, as the Āryas tie a great bull elephant trained by cows,
making my arms the tethering post, I will bind him with my hair
and take hold of his chest;
and if I do not do so, like the wealth of one who hoarded
without giving to those who sought him with longing,
let my beauty, watched over by mother,
suffer without spreading and being revealed to the world!
