‘Seeing the lack of friends, the distress of kin,
and the flourishing of those who dwell in enmity,
those who do not cross the courtyard of soft breasts,
swollen full with gold-glancing spots,
can indeed bear to live in the same town!’
Thinking thus, day and night coming in close succession,
the sharp fire that consumed the heart and scorched my resolve
was not quenched even by the rain of my industrious effort;
as I endure the rocky wilderness every day,
how does she fare, bearing her sorrow—
she of dark wet tresses and dark complexion,
who, in the clear water-bearing dawn that awakens from entwined sleep
along with the cuckoo of joyous voice upon branches brimming with flowers,
and the sweet tuning of the viḷari note on the pleasing small yāḻ,
held her trust in me, and, moving gently
like a lovely female swan of graceful gait,
approached me with a helpless heart?
