O you who caressed my long, fine tresses and broad shoulders! / Rather than me, who feared being left behind here,
she who resolved to depart is struck with great haste!
Without saying, ‘The path where travelers lament / whenever the soft, mournful call of the forest owl in distant lands
hoots gently as women of tiny hamlets move about, / having parted with old stags of branched antlers to provide scarce food,
is difficult to tread’ — / may the pathways be sweet and calmed,
so that, fleeing the pain of separation, [she] may go with you / through the fine, long forest where grass sprouts
as the cool-eyed sky poured down driving showers, / the sky darkening all around and heat vanishing,
so that tender shoots burst from buds on charred trees, adorning their trunks, / and colorful velvet mites streak the cool earth,
as if bits of dyed cotton were scattered about!
