பின்ஆ கும்மே, முன்னியது முடித்தல்;
With silver-sheathed pestles of tender sugarcane,
while their vine-slender waists sway at every turn,
heaping up white sand resembling fish roe
in the shade of kāñci trees, singing of the wealth of their kin,
young women pound [grain] in the village, where a small kingfisher that ate a leaping snakehead fish
sleeps on a low branch of a marutam tree by the cool ghat, O man of the town!
Even if the desireless mind should desire,
always taking what was heard [from elders] as an elephant goad to turn it back,
examining without swerving from virtue and wealth,
and observing one's own propriety, only after that
is it right to accomplish what was intended.
Such is the conduct of great people; therefore,
when examining rare great men,
if things mingled with such falsehood appear even in those like you,
where can truth be in this world?
