Gathering her bunched fingers of her bracelet-adorned forearm [to support her chin],
with an ascetic heart, having only the daytime for company,
does she grieve? She is truly pitiable!—
In the small village of lovely homes where wild pepper vines creep over the public hall with massive carved pillars,
where a standing male sambar rubbed itself,
where bricks of grey surface have forgotten their dawn oblations,
and the single, long hanging root of a rough-trunked banyan rooted in the fortress wall was kicked by the summer wind,
scattering pairs of pigeons in the pure-raining wide space;
while a shapely-legged, beautiful doe licks the back of the male,
we watch our resting herd under the declining, striped shade shed by the lofty branches of a drooping yā tree,
and at evening time, when deep sorrow comes to torment,
we suffer on this endless, long road.
