நீர்மருங்கு அறியாது, தேர்மருங்கு ஓடி,

"Even if, ceasing the enterprise begun, one's resolute legs of unflagging strength / were to lie still and life were to perish, like a tiger that does not feed / on an elephant it brought down if it fell to the left, / with an undiminishing spirit rising higher and higher / at the time I departed for work, I assured you, saying: / 'If a day passes without thinking of your kohl-lined eyes / whose joyful gaze never tires of gazing each time, / like the fragrant sliced tender mango cut in two by a blade / displaying choice beauty, not a moment / shall I live'—yet you say, 'You seem to have forgotten us / despite those excellent, worthy words spoken with great deference', / so that the sweet smile on your red mouth with fine teeth fades, / O you adorned with choice jewels, who never cease questioning! Listen now: / In the burning wasteland where fierce heat never abates, / the lead elephant whose round temples are withered, / unaware of water, runs towards the mirage / and parches on the path, like a boat in a dried-up river, / in that impassable desert tract that makes those who imagine it shiver; / with the desire to acquire wealth that brooks no scorn, / held fast by shame as my fetter, for that noble deed / only my body was left behind there, / but my loving heart was right beside you!"
