With fine, narrow-meshed nets bound by long ropes, / breaking the ocean's roaring pride, hauling in schools of fish, / joyous with their mates, the fisherfolk, / young and old, crowding with their kin / like a train of sturdy bullocks moving through difficult fords of salt-bearing traders, / drew together with a roar at the soft sandy shore, / and like farmers gathered upon the great threshing floor, / cast [fish] in plenty to fill the empty bowls of beggars, / set down great piles and announced the share-out, / before resting on the high heaps of dense sand, O lord of the shore! / Would your dignity be lost if one day, / coming to the cool, fragrant seaside grove where the laurel tree / blooms with unwashed pearls of buds, you asked: / "How are you?" and then went on?
