The green-legged hen of the tufted egret / when its male is caught in the fine-threaded net / of the dry-headed boys whose food is fat fish, / who went early into the field of black mire, / without eating the food it chews, in the evening time, / embracing its sorrowing chick, suddenly / screams piteously on the palm tree of fine space, / in the lord’s ancient small-hamleted deep-water shore; / before he comes alone with unfailing heart / to our backwater punnai’s ruined-flower grove to wed us, / what is this, my friend? / Like the great cool neytal blooming for bees to feed on / in the front harbor of Toṇḍi with spreading southern waves, / belonging to Kuṭṭuvaṉ of victorious battle and white-tusked elephants, / my eyes have lost their jewel-like glorious beauty / and taken on a gold-like color!
