After the cloud-heavy great rain thunders, shaking the sky, / and the leaping showers have ceased, filling the interiors / of flowers with spotted tiny droplets like smoke, / while the black karuviḷai blooms like the tear-streaming eyes / of helpless women parted from their lovers, / and the water-drenched, lovely tender shoots of the brush-climbing īṅkai / with its downy-headed flowers, as if dipped in ghee, / sway moistly like two sliced charcoal pieces, / while green flowers of avarai cluster thick, and in the wide fields / long ears of ripening paddy bend delightfully to the eye, / at midnight in the dewy season when wet branches droop: / ‘Remaining long in the camp of the fiercely angered king, / will the unrighteous man, unaware of our grief, / come to remove this state?’ / As the north wind blows ceaselessly with this thought, / I cannot bear it, friend, my loneliness!
