நிலம்நீர் அற்று நீள்சுனை வறப்பக்
குன்றுகோடு அகையக், கடுங்கதிர் தெறுதலின்,
என்றூழ் நீடிய வேய்படு நனந்தலை,
நிலவுநிற மருப்பின் பெருங்கை சேர்த்தி,
வேங்கை வென்ற வெருவரு பணைத்தோள்
ஓங்கல் யானை உயங்கி, மதம் தேம்பிப்
பல்மர ஒருசிறைப் பிடியொடு வதியும்
கல்லுடை அதர கானம் நீந்திக்
கடல்நீர் உப்பின் கணஞ்சால் உமணர்
உயங்குபகடு உயிர்ப்ப அசைஇ, முரம்பு இடித்து
அகல்இடம் குழித்த அகல்வாய்க் கூவல்
ஆறுசெல் வம்பலர் அசைவிட ஊறும்,
புடையலம் கழற்கால் புல்லி குன்றத்து,
நடைஅருங் கானம் விலங்கி, நோன்சிலைத்
தொடைஅமை பகழித் துவன்றுநிலை வடுகர்,
பிழிஆர் மகிழ்நர், கலிசிறந்து ஆர்க்கும்
மொழிபெயர் தேஎம் இறந்தனர் ஆயினும்,
பழிதீர் மாண்நலம் தருகுவர் மாதோ;
மாரிப் பித்திகத்து ஈர்இதழ் புரையும்
அங்கலுழ் கொண்ட செங்கடை மழைக்கண்,
மணங்கமழ் ஐம்பால், மடந்தை! நின்
அணங்குநிலை பெற்ற தடமென் தோளே!

As water vanishes from the earth and the deep springs dry up, / as the mountain peaks crack, burnt by the fierce rays, / in the wide space dense with bamboos where the summer heat is long, / resting its great trunk on its moonlight-colored tusk, / having vanquished a kino-like tiger, its frightening broad shoulders / drooping, that tall elephant grows weary, its rut-must fading, / and dwells beside its mate among the sparse trees; / crossing the wilderness of rocky paths, / where salt-merchants bearing mounds of sea-salt / rest to let their exhausted bullocks breathe, and digging the gravel / dig out a wide-mouthed well in the broad space, / which oozes water to relieve the weariness of wayfarers on the road; / traversing the impassable forest on the hill of Pulli / of ankleted feet that sway to and fro, / though he has crossed into the land of another tongue, / where the Vaṭukar dwell close together with arrows fitted to strong bows, / drinkers of fermented liquor roaring in swelling revelry— / he will surely bring you blame-free, glorious beauty, / O young woman of fragrant five-part hair, / whose reddish corners of rain-like eyes bear beautiful tears, / resembling the moist petals of rain-wet wild jasmine, / and whose broad, soft shoulders have gained divine power!
