Because the sun's scorching orb, red as fire, / beat down till the furthest edges of the land wilted, shrivelling, / at the rainless season when enduring living beings languished, wondering: / "Will the earth shift from its place today?" / for the sake of the fledglings perched on the high boughs / of tall, leafless yā trees, / as the warriors from the stony fortresses shot their bows, / across all the paths where the flesh was slashed in streaks of fat, / those who lay with blood pouring from wounds / as though slaughtered with garlands of red oleander flowers, / while kites with blazing eyes pecked at their eyes—swimming across such a forest, / they say: 'He has not gone,' O companion! / across many mountains into the foreign-tongued lands / guarded by the Three Kings of Tamil lands / whose strong and manly living is to feed on the fruit of their bows with victory.
