Fearing that others might discover, kept hidden in secret,
like a dream seen by a demon, our passion subtly matched
countless times, has become public scandal
like the tumbling waterfall pouring from the peak of dark, great Kolli hill,
a terrifying expanse that gathers dark clouds,
belonging to Poṟaiyan of bright-jewelled chest with a spear of victory
and a valorous army! If suppliants go with their poverty as their staff,
he gives fine jewels along with elephants resembling mountains—
Pāri of celebrated, generous fame! Just as flocks of birds with flying wings
leave his Paṟampu mount at dawn, and search in flight all together
for food, seeking bent ears of red paddy, and return at evening
steeped in grief—O foolish heart, believing that he who parted will return likewise!
Clear away your doubt! Cross the wilderness where crickets,
clinging to dried trees, shriek all at once like the bell of an ox
in an uṟavinar salt-merchant's caravan; just as fish follow departing water,
I have resolved to follow in his footsteps!
