Can you bring yourself to depart, longing for your duty, O lord,
without reflecting: 'Here she will suffer,
her small forehead turning pale, her broad shoulders drooping,
her beautiful lines fading on her wide, lovely hips,
confusing day and night, tears softly streaming
from her eyes like flowers soaked by rain'?—
Taking the path leading to the mountain in the vast stony terrain,
where the tall, noble elephant, having vanquished the tiger's murderous fight,
is intoxicated with dark must, raging with great rut,
and terrifying wayfarers in the wide, arrow-shot expanse;
where a pack of large-pawed bears searches for white ants
in the ant-hill mounds of crumbling walls, in the common hall overgrown with shrubs,
where the deity has departed from the black-trunked wooden post,
yet unable to abandon it out of old familiarity of living together,
the dark pigeon calls to its mate?
