Yesterday at daytime, appearing at the millet field, / he came wearing jewels flashing with precious gems; / with an appearance resembling a kingly protector, / he spoke soft, pleading words like begging folk; / as I beat the clapper of many uses without force / to chase the parrots descending on the small millet, / saying, 'You who stand like a goddess of the mountains, / who are you? O you who torment us! Let us partake,' / he embraced my slender back; thereupon, / melting like earth in heavy downpour, fearing / he might discern my inner distress, / like a frightened hind trapped in an inner pen, / unable to free its tied legs, / I stepped back and stood with firm resolve, / so that he was unable to utter another word to me; disheartened, / like a bull elephant parted from its herd, he turned back; even today, / he is sure to come—O companion, shall we go? / Not knowing that the right over my soft-shouldered plump arms / is blameless and his own, / so that, feeling helpless, he strives to stand outside seeking my favour: / let us laugh at that gracious lord!
