In the dark expanse of sky, like sapphire, pregnant with water,
thunder resounds; with drops of rain
the ground grows cool, the forest puts forth green shoots;
ploughmen, seeking their teams, raise sweet voices;
encircling his tender mate with their fawn, in the forest tract
the blackbuck with twisted horns leaps across green sprouts—
in this morning brought by dark clouds that offer copious showers,
as the tall chariot, drawn by swift horses reined in
by the skillful charioteer to obey his mouth's command,
with bells ringing loudly on steeds trained according to rules of horsemanship,
cuts through the pathways of the moist woodland,
and on the sweet-stringed, fine, sorrowful yāḻ the cevvaḻi melody arises—
when the innocent woman of divine chastity said,
‘If he does not arrive in this state, what will his state be?
Tell me a little, O bard!’,
you have come to dispel the deep distress in her confused heart that lost its will to work!
You have done sweetly! May your garland live!
While she of sweet smiles and youthful beauty embraces you,
her abundant, fragrant hair smelling of the great garland
of white-flowering jasmine intertwined on fences,
may your broad chest endure, O lord!
