‘Her tresses have taken on short curls, and her breasts,
with soft tips rounded, compete with caskets;
she has become fully fit for womanhood’—so many times
looking at her as my eye's companion, even yesterday
my heart was truly suspicious! And yet,
not knowing, I did not keep her confined!
Without even removing the anklets in her vast mansion, hard to guard,
which is like the Kūṭal of the great-named Vaḻuti,
going far away, drooping beside dry water-holes,
in the desert pathway where fresh, round-eyed green fruits of the gooseberry,
pecked and eaten by forest birds and shaken down by the summer wind,
fall upon the barren ground like pierced beads of crystal from broken necklaces—
suddenly going with the youth of the sharp spear who deceived me,
will she indeed rest in the small hamlet of the forest dwellers,
where they cook meat in the front yard of huts
resembling bushes heaped with broad leaves of teak?
