In the vast pool of water where fish teem at the bathing ghat,
having fed on the delicate blossoms of white water lilies, the damp, cool,
old male buffalo with curved horns and high nape
sleeps in the miry, thick mud; as the sun sets,
he stirs so that fresh, fat varāl fish are severed,
and wearing vibrant creepers of pakaṉṟai, enters the old town
like a warrior dense in armor for battle; the man from such an agricultural town—
as women who do not know the town's reproach repeatedly bestow
loosened shoulders with exquisite jewels brought to his chariot,
is not able to endure his courtesan ways; being so, is it fit for you
to sulk in vain?—O lady of the house!
Those capable of living sulking at that,
knowing that they will become abandoned ones, as the goddess of wealth departs,
sifting meager grain to cook and eat by themselves in loneliness,
as children of sweet words suck their withered breasts—
alas, those who feel anger do not know this!
