கான மானதர் யானையும் வழங்கும்
வான மீமிசை உருமுநனி உரறும்
அரவும் புலியும் அஞ்சுதக வுடைய
இரவழங்கு சிறுநெறி தமியை வருதி-
வரையிழி யருவிப் பாட்டொடு பிரசம
முழவுச்சேர் நரம்பின் இம்மென இமிரும்
பழவிறல் நனந்தலைப் பயமலை நாட!-
மன்றல் வேண்டினும் பெறுகுவை ஒன்றோ
இன்றுதலை யாக வாரல் வரினே
ஏமுறு துயரமொடு யாமிவண் ஒழிய
எற்கண்டு பெயருங் காலை யாழநின்
கற்கெழு சிறுகுடி எய்திய பின்றை
ஊதல் வேண்டுமாற் சிறிதே- வேட்டொடு
வேய்பயில் அழுவத்துப் பிரிந்தநின்
நாய்பயிர் குறிநிலை கொண்ட கோடே!

On the deer-path in the forest, elephants also roam;
high in the sky thunder roars exceedingly;
snakes and tigers are fearful to behold;
yet by that narrow path traversed at night you come alone—
O lord of the fruitful mountain of ancient fame and broad expanses,
where honeycombs hum sweetly like lute-strings joined to a drum
along with the song of the waterfall cascading from the peaks!—
If you desire marriage, you shall have it. But now,
from today onward, do not come! If you do come,
while we remain here in bewildered distress,
at the time you see me and depart, alas, after you reach
your boulder-strewn small hamlet,
you must sound a little—your horn,
which held its place as a signal to call the dogs
that had strayed during the hunt in the bamboo-dense tract!
