அம்ம! வாழி தோழி! காதலர்
'வெண்மணல் நிவந்த பொலங்கடை நெடுநகர்,
நளிஇருங் கங்குல் புணர்குறி வாய்த்த
களவும் கைம்மிக அலர்ந்தன்று அன்னையும்
உட்கொண் டோ வாள் காக்கும் பிற்பெரிது
இவண்உறைபு எவனோ? அளியள்!' என்று அருவி
'ஆடுநடைப் பொலிந்த புகற்சியின், நாடுகோள்
அள்ளனைப் பணித்த அதியன் பின்றை
வள்ளுயிர் மாக்கிணை கண்ணவிந் தாங்கு
மலைகவின் அழிந்த கனைகடற்று அருஞ்சுரம்
வெய்ய மன்றநின் வைஎயிறு உணீஇய
தண்மழை ஒருநாள் தலைஇய ஒண்ணுதல்
ஒல்கியல் அரிவை நின்னொடு செல்கம்!
சில்நாள் ஆன்றனை யாகஎனப் பன்னாள்
உலைவில் உள்ளமொடு வினைவலி உறீஇ
எல்லாம் பெரும்பிறி தாக வடாஅது
நல்வேற் பாணன் நல்நாட்டு உள்ளதை
வாட்கண் வானத்து என்றூழ் நீள்இடை
ஆட்கொல் யானை அதர்பார்த்து அல்கும்
சோலை அத்தம் மாலைப் போகி
ஒழியச் சென்றோர் மன்ற
பழியெவன் ஆங்கொல் நோய்தரு பாலே?

Listen, my friend, may you live long! Our lover,
when our secret union in the spacious town of golden gate and piled white sand
prospered in the dense, dark night,
and the town gossip rose excessively, and mother too
watched over me with relentless caution, thought,
‘After this, what is the point of her staying here greatly distressed? Pitiful is she!’
and said, ‘Like the large drum whose eyes fell silent with its resounding tone,
after Atiyaṉ, rejoicing in his strutting gait like a waterfall,
humbled Aḷḷaṉ who seized kingdoms,
the mountain beauty was ruined in the dense forests of the difficult wasteland tract,
so fierce indeed! For you to feed upon cold water with your sharp teeth,
as a cool rain fell one day, O slender maiden with a radiant forehead,
we shall go with you! Rest content for a few days!’
Having resolved upon his task with an untiring heart for many days,
he rendered everything utterly different, and going north
to the good country of Pāṇaṉ of the good spear,
in the broad expanse of fierce heat beneath the sword-bright sky,
passing through the grove wasteland where man-killing elephants lie in wait along the path,
he went away at evening, leaving us behind!
What blame can there be then upon fate that brings this pain?
