‘If you understood that pleasure and suffering, union and separation,
are of diverse natures and arise contrary to each other,
like the bright daylight hours and the night,
is it fitting, O irresolute heart,
to enter the painful, fierce wasteland tract, driven by intense desire?
If you have resolved to go, will you ever think of me at all,
after having crossed the demon-haunted wilderness of paths
where those who kill do not lament for the victims walking past,
nor do they grieve when casting away their weapons—
paths where at crossroads with corpses, ravens of sapphire-like eyes
and dark-hued bodies sit on dry-branched trees bound to ant-hills,
beside the skin of snakes shed with fine stripes,
resembling streams flowing down red hillsides,
and where in wide, salty expanses tied to brackish ground,
animals rush in great agony desiring the shimmering heat
of the fierce-rayed sun as though it were water, where bowstring hemp shrivels?’
