சாரல் நாடன் சாயல் மார்பே!

On slopes rich with mountain mangoes, rising to the right,
with thunder pealing like the drums of bardic dancers,
a powerful rain poured in the dead of night;
stumbling over the fresh hoods of snakes in the midnight hour,
he came at night, embraced my bosom, and circling me,
made my sorrow vanish, sweetly uniting with me in the dark.
If we had known clearly that such love would turn to hostility,
as shining bangles slip and vast afflictions torment us,
every time we embraced, whenever we embraced,
we would have gathered him in and held him tight, O friend!—
the tender chest of the lord of the slopes
where a gentle female elephant gives birth after a heavy pregnancy
upon the mist-crept hill, and as her body that chewed bamboo is caressed
by the desiring bull elephant, she sleeps upon the plantain-covered ridge!
