While my flower-like eyes and forehead turn pale,
and pining deeply I suffer here, if our lover
has resolved to depart and is able to live on,
will he rest even briefly and then travel across the wasteland,
where the howling wind whirls up dust from the fierce battlefront
where oxen take rest, freed from red ropes hitched to curved yokes
by salt merchants joining together in the day, with bells tolling
in little hamlets of dense huts and fair homes?—
having crossed many mountains with frost-bound peaks and dry springs
where tigers enter and give birth in dark, hanging groves,
and where a young tiger with small stripes leaps and breaks the strong back
of a tall, noble elephant who, longing for water, reaches out his trunk, screams, and roars.
