Gathering flowers in the backwaters, staying in the littoral woods,
playing with crab-images on the striped sand,
uniting in delight, bowing low in utter humility,
making his own anguish manifest, yet because of his incomprehension
of our blameless anguish, with an unconcerned heart,
alas, the lord of the soft seashore departs!
Standing before him, grieving behind him as he goes,
did my lacking-in-resolve heart go to restrain him,
and reach him? Even if it reached him,
was it too shy to speak of desire?
Look there! The chariot he rode,
upon the heap of white sand dunes,
and by the leaves of the screwpine on the shore,
crushing the delicate creeping adambu vines with fine bracelets [of petals],
like the fast-moving curved boat launched into the vast sea
by the fishermen of the small hamlet,
vanishes, disappearing as its rising form fades away!
