On the tall-trunked, red-sprouted iruppai tree,
the abundant white flowers, as if turned on a lathe,
are the leftovers eaten after tearing down high branches
by the female bear whose litter is like scattered play-counters;
the hunter women, wearing aprons of fresh foliage,
gather them with sticks of knot-clustered, long bamboo,
and wander through every street of the small hamlets in the hill country;
leaving behind many such little village lands,
he who went has no love, my friend!—
having crossed the barren wilderness, sharp as the blade of a sword
drawn to wage war against the Vēḷir
by Titiyaṉ of liquor-induced joy, who sat in the daily assembly
bestowing many vessels, as bards with small lutes
of black stems tuned to difficult modes sang loudly!
