Breaking the sprouts of the thick-rooted bamboo,
feasting together with its herd, a lustrous bull elephant
guarded its flank against the fierce-fighting tiger lurking at the waterhole, struck it down,
and washed the dripping gore from its sharp tusk in the mountain cleft;
then, treading softly along the layered slopes,
with the proud gait of one who crushed a bitter foe,
as six-legged bees hum like a yāḻ lute,
it mates with its cow elephant and rests on the plantain-covered slope.
Such is the lord of the land! 'His grace matches your beauty,'
so you spoke pleasant words, speaking gently with love.
They have come true—may you live long, my friend!—
For his garland-fragrant chest, sweet as nectar to those who desire him,
his embrace without even a bee coming between,
and his undiminished love are just as on the very first day!
