"Though they possess great grace to remove the misery of a darkened heart,
I know too that giving cannot be accomplished by those without wealth.
Yet, when an elephant in fierce fury pierces with its mighty tusks
and snaps them off, peeling the bark of a withered marāam tree
to feed its sweet mate in the cruel summer heat,
even the scorched, fissured desert where loneliness reigns
would not be hard for us to traverse—
if only we went taking with us the bright-braceleted young girl,
her red mouth flowing with nectar behind sharp teeth,
sweeter than water,
and her youthful, unripened green breasts grown with charms,
radiantly blooming alongside beauty that brings radiant smiles,
like round hailstones of yellowish hue like grain-measures,
and white flower-buds like pearls strewn about,
as the fresh, ornament-like blossoms resembling sandalwood paste,
fair and desirable, appearing on the very day
the sheath-covered spathe, belly-shaped like a polished sword,
bursts open along the stem of the areca palm,
its crown clustered with fruits like umbrellas wrapped in bundles of many woven flowers,
its short-stalked, stout trunk having endured the long heat of the sun
encircling the ramparts of the ancient, storied city of Ceḻiyaṉ,
whose victory-bearing drum sounds war in flower-garlanded battle,
opening its dense whiskers like a waved yak-tail fan for the bees to drink!"
