குழற்காற் சேம்பின் கொழுமடல் அகலிலைப்
பாசிப் பரப்பிற் பறழொடு வதிந்த
உண்ணாப் பிணவின் உயக்கஞ் சொலிய
நாளிரை தரீஇய எழுந்த நீர்நாய்
வாளையொடு உழப்பத் துறைகலுழ்ந் தமையின்
தெண்கட் டேறல் மாந்தி மகளிர்
நுண்செயல் அம்குடம் இரீஇப் பண்பின்
மகிழ்நன் பரத்தைமை பாடி அவிழிணர்க்
காஞ்சி நீழற் குரவை அயரும்
தீம்பெரு பொய்கைத் துறைகேழ் ஊரன்
தேர்தர வந்த நேரிழை மகளிர்
ஏசுப என்பவென் நலனே அதுவே
பாகன் நெடிதுயிர் வாழ்தல் காய்சினக்
கொல்களிற்று யானை நல்கல் மாறே
தாமும் பிறரும் உளர்போல் சேறல்
முழவிமிழ் துணங்கை தூங்கும் விழவின்
யானவண் வாராமாறே வரினே வானிடைச்
சுடரொடு திரிதரும் நெருஞ்சி போல
என்னொடு திரியான் ஆயின், வென்வேல்
மாரி யம்பின் மழைத்தோற் சோழர்
வில்லீண்டு குறும்பின் வல்லத்துப் புறமிளை
ஆரியர் படையின் உடைகவென்
நேரிறை முன்கை வீங்கிய வளையே!

On the mossy expanse beneath the broad leaves of succulent hollow-stemmed taro,
so that the distress of his starving mate lying with pups might be ended,
the otter rose to bring morning prey
and struggled with a vāḷai fish, clouding the bathing ghat;
hence, women who have imbibed clear fermented liquor,
setting down their finely wrought, beautiful pots,
sing without restraint of the lord's philandering
and dance the kuravai dance under the shade of blooming kāñci trees,
in the lord's town endowed with sweet, vast pool-ghats.
They say the well-adorned women brought by his chariot
mock my beauty! That is like the charioteer living long
because the fierce, enraged, killer bull-elephant spares him!
That they and others walk around as if they are proud
is only because I have not come there to the festival
where the drum-sounding tuṇaṅkai dance is performed! If I do come,
if he does not turn toward me like a goat's-head burr flower
turning with the sun in the sky,
let the bracelets swell and shatter on my forearms with fine joints,
like the army of the Āryas at the outer defensive forest of Vallam,
the bow-crowded stronghold of the Cōḻas,
whose rain-clouds of shields shower a downpour of victorious spear-arrows!
