“‘Her body is like the cool, fresh shoot of the high-branched yā tree on the slope
sprouted by the rains; lest her wide, serene, rain-like eyes
be left in lonely desolation,
since living apart here brings no sweetness,
let wealth remain there!’—so saying,
where a brahmin carries an epistle, a folded white palm-leaf,
in the small hill tract of many rocks resembling a herd of salt-merchants’ pack-oxen,
and Maḻavar warriors with weapons in hand, observing his approach,
thought, ‘In the hands of this one with a starving belly,
there might just be gold,’ and needlessly
cut him down together, but seeing the poverty of his worthless rags,
snapped their fingers in disappointment with their straight arrows, and departed;
while a lone dog-fox on a path of striped sansevieria,
having gnawed at the hanging entrails dripping with trails of blood,
sits howling in the shade of a spurge bush
at a fork that catches the eye, where white pebbles gleam;
in such a difficult path of the hot forest where the cloud's eye has turned away,
you returned to us alone, thinking:
‘In the cold, dark night, when the loud, thundering sky pours rain,
she will suffer in the intensely cold north wind.’”
