Among the kings of armies filled with valour,
who are extolled in regions where mountains echo,
standing with an upright sceptre held fast to righteousness,
felling their battle-valour and rising with victorious, high, stout shoulders,
is the Pāṇḍya adorned with fresh gold ornaments of much-praised wealth.
On the slopes of his high, sacred mountain,
‘Toward the dark-complexioned maiden of cooling, braided hair,
and a fragrant forehead smelling of flowering gloriosa lily clusters,
even if it is not possible to embrace her,
wrapping round her generous back with fine, slender, shining bangles,
may our intimacy—which serves as a consoling companion
to this yearning heart—never perish, like Kolli
of the wide, dark forest belonging to the victorious-speared Poṟaiyan
of unapproachable might, who crushes enemy lands to ruins!
And toward her, may messengers never cease!’—
[May they be] more numerous than the roaring ocean waves
at the great harbor of ceaseless traffic,
in the wealth-filled town of the Cōḻa of gathered battles,
lord of young warriors who, carrying shining, firm-hilted swords
drawn to scrape the skies, bring back unyielding foes’ newly calved cows!
