Fast horses bound with tightening speed [to] the long chariot;
in the ruts where its sturdy, spoke-bearing wheels have sunk,
water rushes and runs like a snake;
bean pods shrink and burst open like fingers that let go their clasp;
and the early-dew season has set in.
My manhood pushes me forward with an unwavering mind
that rose first for heroic enterprise; love holds me back.
My divided heart sparks with distress inside,
and I have become like an ant trapped in the middle
of a firebrand burning at both ends, unable to move to either side.
Does she suffer? Ah, she is to be pitied!
For her, whose intimacy is like life joined to body,
whose love is like that life living on,
parting is as hard to bear as death.
