To relieve the sorrow of many days, you come by day,
spend it in the pleasant shade of the grove of punnai trees,
and, looking on with grief as evening gathers, you have the charioteer
examine the harness and drive the fine chariot—
ah, give up your desire to depart!
‘Her lovely youthful beauty, fine like Pavattiri of many-flowered littoral woods
belonging to Tiraiyan of golden ornaments and unfailing good fame, is perishing;
the backwaters have swollen swiftly with the high tide;
and on the paths, powerful fish roll about along with sharp-toothed sea-monsters;
those who departed have surely made the time grow dim and confused’—
so that our grief on your account may cease, what if you stay here today,
O lord of lonely shores brilliant with blossoms?
We shall feed you porridge mixed with curds,
and dough of hot rice bought in exchange for fresh fish.
We shall adorn you with sweet, bee-humming sandalwood paste
prepared by blending with ingredients of the western land
the white-hued block of paste given by the northerners,
in our village situated on the expanse of the clear sea,
where the long nets with curved knots, torn by leaping, predatory sharks
as the fishermen of skilled labor who pursued their daytime toil in stout boats
struck them with the fierce swiftness of their sharp chisels,
hang swaying on screw-pines in front yards, free from work,
whenever the cool sea breeze strikes them.
