In the cool, fragrant woodland where small, dark pidavu bushes / burst into white clusters like wreaths, / where an antlered male blackbuck antelope, with double-twisted horns / resembling the forked pole carried by a shod forester, / feeds his gentle doe where calves frisk / with tender, red stalks of thick-leaved couch grass, / and on the long-sanded shore embracing the clear stream / he guards her resting form as he chews his cud— / so that the heart shattered by that noble lord finds relief, / let the chariot rush on, O driver blessed with victory! / In the well-guarded inner quarters where geese with pure down, / washed like cloth rinsed by a broad-shouldered washerwoman with softened fingers, / sport with their mates, / she holds on her wrist a green parrot with a red collar / and, fearing the household folk might know, / softly teaches it sweet, babbling words, saying: / 'Tell me of his arrival today, concerning the one who departed!'— / that the chaste young woman of bashful grace may regain her supreme beauty!
