On the white-hued alkaline waste where abundant rain poured,
whenever the stirring cool breeze touches, the crooked-stemmed piṭavu,
whose clustered buds blossom like moonlight,
and where flocks of peacocks slowly walk among tree-dense woods,
resembling the skilfully crafted boats of women
with bright foreheads and sharp, fair, beautiful teeth—
before the darkness of evening falls, swiftly,
so that the clear bells with tongue-shaped clappers jingle,
and the galloping horses, their speed like sound in shadow,
shine with radiant pole-top ornaments, select the reins
and drive, o skilful charioteer, may you prosper!—
so that we may behold the smiling face of my sweetly beloved lady,
who is afflicted and distressed by the onset of pallor!
