‘As the skies have poured drops, the heat has departed,
and cool season has arrived, let us go!’—though we had desired greatly
to depart, in former days he lied to us, saying:
‘Because the goddess residing in the forest of lofty renown has granted grace,
so that we may wear on our slender, raised loins
the red-flower garland of black-stemmed vēṅkai from the mist-crawling Ēḻil hill,
sung by the poet of refined, subtle treatise, possessed of ancient fame,
who obtained white-legged horses of many hosts,
let a few days pass that we may rejoice!’
Even so, friend, as the young men with well-fashioned spears
wear them on their heads for bees to drink, when tree branches sprout forth dark shoots,
and the rain clouds having dispersed and vanished, on the hills,
the white flowers of large branches on black-stemmed nuṇavu trees,
which bloomed in the spray of tiny white cascades, pattern quickly
the narrow path of red sand, let the forest gain beauty!
And in the path where a single, long hanging root of a ficus,
bending in the blowing wind, sweeps the stony openings,
let them travel, resting in the shadows of the lingering sun!
