Though my shoulders lose their ancient beauty,
and each day the pallor of separation steals my charm and afflicts me,
leaving to us the village whisper and the public scandal of the ancient town
from the hot-mouthed settlement, murmuring like the resounding eye
of the well-tuned drum made by Cēralātaṉ of the great, faultless army,
who drove [his foes] into the dark ocean and felled the kaṭampu tree,
may the enterprise he went for truly succeed for him!—
May you live long, my companion!—He who crossed the mountain with tall trees,
where on the ridge of withered bamboos where clouds hid and vanished,
because a fierce, bright-striped tiger sprang,
a white-tusked elephant of rounded feet roared in dread,
and the simple-headed female elephant, leaving her calf and fleeing,
with wild distress, hands placed upon her head,
searches like women who have lost their sons!
